Happy Mondays: Tranquility

Hello,

I am on my lunch break at Edinburgh Uni. ‘Tis good.

1. Annoyingly, I was offered about six weeks’ full time work at a different university department last week. They asked for my CV in January, but didn’t contact me until now, when I already have full time work for that period.

2. Other work-wise, I have an interview tomorrow for a full time section editor position for a website. Salary is listed as being ‘competitive’, which I suspect might mean ‘shit’, but I’ll interview and see. If it pays enough, it’d be great. But I'm also enjoying UoE. It's just that there's no long term stability.

3. I’m also doing a rather interesting proofreading job just now. A German writer found my website (which omg so needs updated) by googling ‘Scottish proofreading’ and I’m now ‘proofing’ her novel for Scottish dialect – one of the characters is Scottish. I say ‘proofing’ because, really, it’s editing. Either way, it’s fun. I underquoted her a bit, really, looking at the amount of work. The good news is that she actually said my original quote seemed low, and wanted to up it. But I think it’s possibly still a bit low. Still, it’s one of two books, and there’s more work in the second. She’s said that if the work on the first book goes well, she’ll bring me back for the second, and I could up the quote for that. It’s a bit of a violent rapey sort of book, not the sort I would usually read, but I’m actually quite enjoying it. It’s a page turner (or a flicker, as I’m reading it through on my phone. Not quite the same as Kindle, ‘cause it doesn’t remember my place, but still friendlier than reading it in Word)

4. Also started the at home editing work I mentioned last week. I think one of the pieces I sent was a dud, but otherwise it seems to be soul-sucking crap that I can happily do to bring it some extra pennies and probably learn new SEO skills.

5. Started aquafit. It’s so much fun. A large part of it is just being in water. I love swimming and submerging and chilling in water. The class itself was great though – very toning, which balances well with doing Zumba on Tuesdays, which is more cardio. It’s totally inelegant though. Where the aim of swimming is to find the path of least resistance and glide like a fish, the point of aquafit is to find the path of maximum resistance, and push against it, and thus be well toned and exercised. Came home feeling all happy

6. Learnt a new word – nomenclature. I like it.

7. Went to John’s party on Friday night. It was nice to catch up with folk; I hadn’t been to a party party like that in a while, where lots of people know are all in the same room. It was fun, although we didn’t arrive ‘til late as we both went after Ari’s tour. I’m not as accustomed to late night shin digs as once I was.

8. Next day, went to the Eurovision party at Bernard and Lila’s place. Had a late drinky night the day before so was fairly quiet and sober, which is not generally how I like my Eurovision. Still, loved the Moldova performance, and had really good cupcakes courtesy of Erin H.

9. Booked flights home for my Ma’s 70th next month. Didn’t want to fly, but it was the cheapest way by a long shot. Eugh, flying. But the alternative was to not go, and we have to.

10. Hennaed my hair. Not as red as I’d like it, but nice and shiny.

11. Sorry kids; dull week.

12. Do you know, I’m not even sorry! I like dull. I took my own lunch into work every day last week, and I got to bed by ten most nights with a cup of camomile tea, and yesterday I did some ironing, and we’ve watched lots of Coronation Street. My Dull Life fricking rocks and I’m not sorry at all!

Sorry.

Bye!
