Comedy

Hi,

Before we leave Australia, I would like to try my hand at stand up, before we get back to Edinburgh and I can't walk into a room without knowing everyone.

Any advice on how to get started on writing a set? Have a few ideas but only small or irrelevant.

I guess I'm thinking manily of Sian here, but anyone else too.

*laughs at thinking 'manily' of Sian*
I don't know anything about set-writing myself, though. Good luck!

Hiya,

I'd love you see you do stand-up and I would be happy to help. Sit down and think of things you've seen or done that have made you laugh. If there's something which really annoys you too, that would be funny.

A lot of people break the ice with some jokes about themselves.

Write 10 minutes of material and throw away the lesser half.

If you email me a set, I'll email you the director's commentary.

Good luck.

Ashley

P.S. Now... how do I get a gig in Australia! :)

Let me know when you're coming over.

If only I were coming over to Aussie-land. I'll have to put that onto the back burner, though I've wanted to at various points.

Unfortunately, with starting a new job and getting Daisy through her degree, there's not going to be a time to go down under until at least after August!

D'oh!

Well seriously, let me know if you ever do go, I would probably be able to get you something on an incidental-to-a-holiday basis, even if I'm not around myself.

How is Daisy?

Daisy's surviving her course... just... The sleepless nights will end in a few weeks.

Hey hon...

The first stand up set I did I just thought of the wierdest and funniest things that have ever happened to me and made them into 3 minute anecdotes. Saying that, I also did an off the cuff song about Big Brother which will NEVER be repeated so maybe I'm not the best person to ask.

My biggest advice would be to think about how you want to come across...arsey, confident, sweet, gossipy, etc and then play around with stuff you think that side of you would say. Make it an exaggeration, it'll make you feel more confident on stage.

And, I don't think you need to actually, but it's sometimes a good plan to practice mic technique.

Hope that's useful...but listen to Ashley, he's better than me and has coached me many a time when I've got the jitters. (As in nervous. Not crabs. He's good...but not that good.)

Love you

Sian
