Jul. 8th, 2007 10:18 amMy grandmother wants me to have her mother's wedding ring when I get married. Then she wants me to pass it down the female line, to the eldest daughter.
The significance of this is astounding. I mean, her mother died when she was very young and when her dad was tortured to death by the Japanese at Changi in WW2, it left her orphaned. She and her sister, Val, had to live in an orphanage in Brisbane until they were sixteen and then they had to make their own way in the world. Val married a brilliant radio journalist and Grandma married his friend, Charles Patterson, who was to become the best recognised radio voice in central Queensland. Granddad died a couple of months ago. He was always a small man compared to her, and they bickered all the time. He was her shadow, but he was also her soul. So poor old Grandma has been walking around without her shadow and now she's really sick.
She sees her future in this ring, in the long line of eldest daughters who'll wear it. I'll hold her future on my finger when I marry Lizzie. And the future of all our daughters.
Grandma is going to die soon, I realise this now. The present is tiny.
