Hi folks! We're in Fiji, wow! First night we stayed in Nadi in a very dodgy hostel with some bloke who claimed to be a woman, yet obviously wasn't, and therefore very untrustworthy. We got up at 6 for a 4 hour bus journey to Suva (and I mean bus, not coach/any luxury. (It was cool.)) Then we stayed in another dodgy hostel in Suva.
And then yesterday...we arrived in Paradise. The place we're staying at is in Pacific Harbour, directly opposite where Ari used to live and is termed a 'luxury backpckers'. This means that for FJ$72 a night (about 25 quid) we have a twin room in a kind of apartment set up, where we share kitchen, bathroom, lounge and air hockey table with 3 other rooms. It's bliss.
It's a big tourist complex, but it's not tacky, it's being run by people who are proud of it and it provides economy for locals. We have a swimming pool with a bar and a spa at our disposal. The beach where I used to live is just a walk up the track. My house where I used to live burnt down years ago and there's just the foundations now, but the same people who own this....
Ooh interesting. We were in an internet cafe yesterday and the damned thing shut down unexpectedly. I went to post again today and it saved what we'd written! Woo hoo! The thing is, Miss Ari isn't here just now to finish what she was saying. She is making busy and important type notes, while I catch up on internetty things. Maybe later I will go for a dip in the spa. Heh heh.
Actually, we are going into Suva when Ari has finished stuff. We're going to go to the Hare Krishna restaurant I have heard so much about..ohh here she is. I hope. Either that or someone is molesting me... no it's her. Phew.
Cool. I just interviewed the only Fijian journalist present in parliament house during the Speight coup. Very very interesting. I just finished making notes. His mother used to be my family's house girl, and through immense coincidence she is here, now running three businesses and being fabulous. She has treated me and Lizzie like granddaughters since we've been here. I gave Miko the journalist three chickens for his children to eat at Kelesi's suggestion for a present in exchange for interview.
Must toddle off to Suva, that dirty great pustule on the nose of the island.
Byee!

Date: 2006-07-28 12:48 am (UTC)I am hungover today. We spent last night drunk in the massive hot spa next to the pool and the bar. Had such an excellent time. Must drink something now though, before I die of badness.
It's raining and everything smells of wet rainforrest. *happy sigh*
