Does anyone know anything about cars? Or maybe have any jump leads?

Hello,

Hermione, my lovely wee Vauxhall Astra is sick.

The following things are wrong:
1. The alarm does not work
2. The lock does not work (managed eventually to lock it manually)
3. Probably most crucially: it does not start. The engine doesn't even turn over at all.

It was fine a week ago - I drove it round the block to check when we were sill planning on driving down south. The thing that have gone wrong happened all at once, which suggest perhaps a dead battery? And yet the lights still work, and also the dashboard lights.

Any advice? I have breakdown cover but not homestart :(. If it is the battery, does anyone live nearby and maybe have any jump leads?

She's too pretty to die so young.

Hmm, may indeed be the battery, but sounds a bit weird for the lights to all still be working just as well as they did. I'd still be inclined to say the battery because of the alarm/lock. Otherwise I'd think starter motor (does it make any sound when you try and turn it over? Any clicking or anything?)

Sadly, we don't have jump leads :(.

It does seem to click - is that good or bad?

Anyhow, Brian's gonna come and try jump starting it tomorrow, or Phil-who-isn't-yours has offered that it might be the fuse box.

Clicking is good! Means the starter motor hasn't jammed/exploded :)

checking connections to and from battery would be the first thing to do. a dead or knocked out fuse in fuse box is the likely option re doors/alarm (not being able to turn off alarm may mean alternator not working, thus not being able to start). sorry i didn't see this earlier as i have jump leads.

if it's still messed up after Brian shows, you can still use breakdown to a. confirm problem and b. get it to your mechanic.
