1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?

Properly freelanced. Been on the radio. Went to Brighton. Drove a van in the snow. Went to Mull. Witnessed large parts of childbirth.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Apparently I wanted to sort the house out and write more and a secret project I had. Secret project didn't work out, but that's probably for the best. The house is sorted, however, and I have written more and my career is in a much better shape from most points of view. Not a financial one, unfortunately.

Also I wanted to quite drinking for at least three months. I didn't exactly not drink at all during that time, but up until about August I drunk very little, generally. It all went a bit wrong after that. Then December...well, it's been Christmas and stuff.

For next year, I want to have a stable income. I also want to have less fear of looking ridiculous, which is my major fear in life and pretty much stops me from doing stuff.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Hell, yeah - Emily! I missed it by about 3 minutes! But I did get to hold wee baby Seth when he was about half an hour old and it was one of the most profound and amazing experiences ever.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Auntie Anne died. Not close, we hadn't seen her in years, but it was all very tragic and awful. I didn't go to the funeral as I couldn't make it down, which is a shame in one sense, but a relief in another.

5. What states/countries did you visit?
England, Scotland. Moslty in Edinburgh, spent a fair bit of time in Stratford, a couple of days in Brighton, a few odd days in Blair Atholl and a week in Mull. Went to Glasgow a couple of times. Haven't really moved very far this year at all though, generally.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
More money. A solid career.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
16 October, when Seth was born.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting out the other side with a house and relationship solidly intact, and a career and bank account held together, if only with multiple pieces of sellotape and fairy dust.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not gaining enough work.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I had a flu-ey virus last month, and a couple of days ago burnt myself in very inappropriate places by pouring a cup of peppermint tea down my crotch, but generally, no. The good thing about this year is that I've had time to chill and spend time with loved ones, which is incredibly good for your immune system.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The new bathroom.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Emily's. I am immensely proud of the way she handled the whole birth thing and continues to do the whole motherhood thing. I am in awe of her.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Tommy Sheridan. I think that kind of perjury is one of the worst possible crimes. I know the actual perjury was not this year, but he has double perjured by lying in a perjury case.  I am planning a longer blog post on this soon, for those who would like clarification.

14. Where did most of your money go?
House renovations

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Seth's arrival. My new mug.

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Lyrics actually quite moving.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
- happier or sadder? - Happier. I get happier all the time. I have had some epic stresses and some epic sadnesses this year, but the longer I live through life and continue to be surrounded by awesome folk who love me, the happier I am.
- thinner or fatter? – Ari says fatter. Well that's the end of that marriage.
- richer or poorer? – Oh yes, poorer, poorer, but in wealth, not in spirit.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Applying for work that I thought I'd be under-qualified for - in terms of direct applications and general networking.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying. Crying (to clarify, I'm a great believer in crying when you need to. I just wish that less had made me cry.)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Spent Christmas at home, just me and the missus. It was incredibly lovely.

21. How will you be spending New Years?
Quietly. Every year I say I don't want to go to a big party, I just want to sit in a quiet room sipping things with my favourite people. Every year we end up going out - normally to Morag's party - and having a fabulous time. In the interests of follow through and learning and gorwing, this year will be spent in a quiet quiet room sipping things with my favourite people, many of whom I rarely see (notably Ed, Storm and  Eve)

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Yeah, with Ari and also with Eric off of True Blood, who I had naughty dreams about. I rarely have naughty dreams at all. Hmmm...

23. How many one-night stands?
Only in my dreams (see above)

24. What was your favourite TV program?
I could be predictable and say True Blood. I also enjoyed Mad Men, in terms of new stuff. Oh and Better Off Ted.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't believe in hate.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Radio 6. Not normally a big radio listener but it serves me well, I like the mix of music and the whimisical presenters.

28. What did you want and got?
A better house. Love.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I don't really see films much. New films I saw this year: Burlesque, Harry Potter, the Stars Wars trilogy, Beauty and the Beast, Shank, Life is Beautiful, The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus... wow that's nine films. That's a higher count than ever before, I think, and that's not even quite the full list.  (I realise not all of these can be described as new as such, but I had never seen them.)
Shank is the most unforgettable - I saw it at Glasgay! and the audience laughed a lot. The very serious director was up at the back saying 'I don't understand why people are laughing'. Bad, bad film. Life is Beautiful also vg but harrowing. If I had to choose one to watch again I'd say Burlesque. But it was terrible.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 28 years old. My actual birthday I spent working and attending a parliamentary reception. La dee da. The next day I went to Rivage round the corner with my nearest and dearest. Lovely pie.

32. What one thing would have made your year?
Less family drama.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Elegant cast-offs. Or hand-me-down chic, as Ari would have it.

34. What kept you sane?
Ariadne. John. Inner belief that things will get better.

35. Who did you miss?
I've missed John since he went to Thailand. Missed Australia folk. Missed Georgie since she moved away. Missed Sarah.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
Seth. <apology for stuck record but he's awesome. As awesome as Toby who is not new but still excellent.>

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Money can't buy you happiness. Cliche ahoy. But it's true.
But I would like the chance to prove this.

38. A quote or song lyric that sums up your year.
"Stop feeling sorry for yourself and you will be happy."
— Stephen Fry
