Hmph. I was very tired and then went to bed and now Ari is fast asleep and I can't get to sleep at all. Odd, given I'm so tired.

We've had the Casses in (this is not a euphemism) on and off for the past week or so. Alex came first which was cool. We had a fabulous time and all went to Montville for Ari's birthday and whatnot. Then her parents arrived and we had the big birthday dinner thing, and a night of sleeping on the floor. Then they all left for Rocky and quietness ensued. We discovered how to download stuff onto Ari's shiny new computer, so we downloaded the entire Scrubs Season 4 and watched it. Yum. Season 5 is taking somewhat longer to download - 2 days, currently, whereas S4 took 6 hours. Oh well, it will be worth the wait. Then we can download Buffy and my life will be complete.

Anyway, they all came back yesterday, Ari's parents had the flu AND her Dad has major tooth pain so there was a lotof bear with sore head type action. We had to work, and again with the sleepingon the floor on an air mattress which kind of squeaks. So not much sleep last night. Theoretically I should be tired. And yet.

It was a momentous day though. Alex has now flown off to New Zealand to start a new life. We had a significant type day. Me and Ari took her out for lunch while the parents were off investigating the Myer bra sale (mainly her Mum doing this really). We gave her the book which has got us through many a hard time over the past year Doctor Seuss's 'Oh The Places You'll Go' Highly recommended for anyone in a life crisis, slump, anything. One of my favourite books of all time.

Speaking of books, Morag; I gave Ari The Night Watch for her birthday after you kept saying she must read it. She has started it and says it's depressing. How typically Sarah Waters. She's not one for the jumpin' joy.

Anyway, Alex has now left and there were hugs and waving and good stuff. She's not a little girl anymore*

Gonna piss off and stop being boring now. Byee!

*the fact I have technically known Alex for less than a year I find entirely irrelevant. Ari paints a vivid picture.

PS Hi Alex!

In my leaving book from school/college, everyone had to get someone else to write their message under their photo. My best friend wrote mine and it was the opening from that Dr Seuss book...it made me cry.

Hello! Hope you're feeling better. I hate that over-tired feeling. Is Ari's dad feeling better now? Sore headed parents aren't cool. And younger sisters growing up is soooooo scary, makes you realise you're getting old! I think photos of said bras should be posted. And i'm worried about Sian's and Ari's cat killing tendencies....

Love you both lots and looking forward to seeing you!!

Sure, it's depressing, but it's not *Afiinity* depressing; it's *good* depressing.

But Morag, Affinity saved it all up for the end, and then that was very very sad. But this one - because of the way it was structured, there were lots and lots of horrible disappointments. Watching the relationships disintegrating was just awful. Bleah.

I thought that was what made it so good. Also, The Night Watch is much better written.

Oh I agree. It's her most subtle and well structured yet. But for me that's what makes the emotional impact so much more pronounced. I spent a day reading the middle chunk of the book where Kay and Helen are falling apart but Kay doesn't know it, and actually felt so depressed that it ruined my whole day. Especially when Helen forgot to wear the pyjamas.

But it is the best thing she's written yet and I will read it again for fun with less of a sensation of watching trains crash.

That's me, of course.
