I feel like I have done more things with this week than I would expect to do in a year.

1. Got a shiny new phone. Ari is worried I love it more then her. I wish I could tell her it ain't so.

2. Had lunch with Naomi, who we hadn't seen in forever. Lovely to catch up, and also got Ari's wedding dress back.

3. Went to Stratford.
Got in very late. Slept on a raised double airbed, but actually a comfy one.

4. Buried my grandmother. This went as well as could be expected. There were enough people at the funeral to provide a buffer so as not to let other issues encroach. The service was actually very her, I'm pleased it was fitting. We went to the cream tea afterwards, had scones and made polite chit-chat with the lady from the choir. That's basically the end of my paternal line. Grandma has a sister, but she's not long for this world, and I doubt I will now ever see my father again. I feel as ok with that as I could be. I know that I have a wonderful life with friends and family who love me and a wife who is so awesome she needs to be seen to be believe.

I feel older. I like that my birthday quickly followed the funeral. I'm a generation up now, and I'm very aware of that, but mostly in a positive way. I feel more responsible for my own life, or something.

5. Washing machine broke. Washing machine got fixed. Hurrah for guarantees and well-filed paperwork.

6. Had a lovely dinner with Richard and Penny at a new Italian place in Stratford, the day after the funeral. It was nice to properly catch up with them.

7. Had lunch with Georgina in Rugby. Was really lovely to see her. She was due to come to the Mayor's Ball, but her car broke down, which was terribly sad (not least for her, as it was new). All the more glad we caught up in Rugby, though.

8. New shoes!
Birthday present, but only just arrived. Very practical, but pretty.

9. Had a couple of baths. Oh my god I miss baths.

10. Birthday highlights:
  • Ate Rice Krispies (that is the highlight of any day)
  • Had a delicious lunch at Cafe Rouge with my lady
  • Went to see the Queen! I got dressed up in my fanciest frock (Georgie's fanciest frock, if we're being pedantic) and went to the opening ceremony of the new RSC. I'm always distrustful of rebuilding things that were fine, but they've mostly in fact done a lovely job. The Queen was in pink with an extravangantly tall hat. My mum properly met her and there are pictures of them shaking hands. I sat next to the woman who made the plaque. She was a proper stonemason who apprenticed under her father. Cool.
  • My lady met me with daffodils. She is the loveliest.
  • Went to a really cool tea house. My mum is quite pally with the owner, in that he is a terrific marketer and told us all sorts of things about tea, and gave us some free samples. Well recommended if anyone ever visits Stratford.
  • Got Easter Egg moulds. Will be taking good advantage of those.
  • Went to the Mayor's Ball. We sure did look fancy. Hazel lent us both dresses: Ari's was Hazel's prom dress and mine was proper vintage and used to belong to her ex-grandmother in law. We had comments from two separate people saying how beautiful we looked together on the dancefloor.
  • Led a lesbian revolution. Stratford doesn't have a high proportion of the gay persuasion and I suspect the mayor's daughter being a big lesbo causes quite a stir in some circles. Ari got chatting to a boy of about 17 who was the singer of the KES band. KES is the local boys grammar school (Shakespeare went there), and they were doing a short set in addition to the ceilidh. The boy was asking Ari how she came to be in the country, and she said that she was married to the mayor's daughter. 'Oh' he said 'so are you a lesbian?'. I love people who just straightforwardly say what everyone is thinking. Mostly it's the younger generation. I suspect we un-stuffied his night a little. We danced to his band, and remained the only same-sex couple to grace the dance floor in non-ceilidh dancing all night.
  • The ceilidh was fun though. I'd like to start going to random ceilidh just for fun and stuff. The band was the same as at Richard and Penny's wedding, but this was obviously their more sedate version - the dances were at most half the length as I'm used to, and the gay vicar and an elderly Polish man split us up to dance the worst-executed Strip the Willow I've ever been party to.
  • Everyone at the ball (150-odd folk) sang Happy Birthday to me, and a couple of randoms then wished me Happy Birthday mid-ceilidh. Cool.
11. Had a slightly madncrazy journey home: very nearly missed the train due to a roadblock, then were treated to carriage mates of football fans, followed by a hen party. But being home was so reviving. Wherever I've been, I always experience a sense of relief getting back into Edinburgh - a layer of stress that I wasn't even aware of having falls off me.

12. Got home to a balloon and champagne and beautiful handmade card on my bed, thanks to my tricksy and wonderful friends.

13. Skipped one of the parties we were supposed to go to for Andy and Julie's engagement party. They made me three types of cake! They rock. Despite initial tiredness, we ended up far outstaying our welcome. I haven't been the last to leave a party for a really, really long time and must needs apologise to Jundy both for that, and for calling them Jundy just now. Oy!

14. My planned day of productiveness on Sunday was Scuppered by Hangover (see 12.). Did, however, have an impromptu dinner with Hazel, John and Brian which was hella fun. Hazel made me a cake.

15. Busy week ahead: one actual job interview and one pseudo-job interview on Friday (please cross fingers if you have any free (I know people have lots of their own stuff to cross fingers for so don't tie yourself in knots or nothin')). Work to do, deadlines to meet. Friday night, am having dinner with a couple of folk, originally scheduled on the basis that I wouldn't get to have much of birthday at the time. But now I feel like a massive fraud as I have already had more than my fair share of birthday and have been sung to THREE times.

16. I like Siân.

17. And other people also.

I think that is it. I'll be asleep until around June.

Happy Monday!

You totally didn't outstay your welcome. Everyone was gone before 2am, and it was lovely to have a quiet bit at the end to chat!
