My granddad is dying.
Typically, he asked my grandmother for permission to do so. He always said to her, don't you dare die before I do. He was too dignified to survive with a colostomy bag and slide into doddering old man - hood. He would have been rubbish at it. They discovered new cancer cells and the chemo would have killed him anyway. He has aggressive pnuemonia and shortly, over the next couple of hours, he is expected to go to sleep.
Grandma talked to me for half an hour, during the course of which she also told me hilarious stories about her family - one of my young cousins was taken to seaworld. At the end of the day he was soaking wet and his parents thought nothing of it until they opened his rucksack and discovered he'd picked up and stuffed in a fairy penguin. The penguin was unpeturbed. Frantic, they called the penguin keeper at Seaworld and asked him what to do. He said, 'Ah, just stick him in the bath and bring him back tomorrow. He'll be right.'
My mother is flying out to Australia within 48 hours. Granddad should get a massive send - off. Gloom and doom is forbidden, says Grandma. I wish I could be there, but I know that he will be surrounded by love and jolly good jokes and that he'll always be watching over me.
